What moves the gold price? Interest rates, inflation and the dollar

Melvin van OostenMelvin van Oosten, founder of Gold24··6 min read
Short answer

The gold price is driven mainly by real interest rates, the value of the US dollar, inflation expectations, central bank buying and geopolitical unrest. When rates fall or uncertainty rises, gold often rises. A strong dollar and high rates usually weigh on the price.

Key points
  • Lower real interest rates usually make gold more attractive.
  • A stronger dollar often pushes the gold price down.
  • Uncertainty and crises often bring extra demand.
  • News can cause big moves within minutes.

Interest rates: the most important factor

Gold pays no interest. When rates on savings and bonds are high, holding gold means missing out. When rates fall, gold becomes relatively more attractive. Real rates matter most: the interest rate minus inflation. That is why gold reacts strongly to decisions and statements by the US Federal Reserve.

The US dollar

Gold is priced worldwide in dollars. When the dollar strengthens, gold becomes more expensive for buyers using other currencies, and demand often falls. A weaker dollar usually works the other way. For a euro-based investor, the EUR/USD rate also plays a role.

Inflation and inflation expectations

Many investors see gold as protection against currency debasement. When expectations grow that money will lose value, they often turn to gold. The link is not always direct: in some periods inflation rose while gold fell, because interest rates rose sharply at the same time.

Central banks

Central banks are major buyers of gold. According to the World Gold Council they bought more than 1,000 tonnes in each of 2022, 2023 and 2024. Purchases like that support demand. A change in that policy can move the market noticeably.

Geopolitics and crises

During war, political tension or financial stress, investors look for safe havens, and gold is one of them. These moves can be fast and sharp, and can reverse just as quickly when the unrest fades.

What does this mean for a gold strategy?

Because gold reacts so strongly to news, there are many trading opportunities, but also risks. An automated strategy such as Gold24’s analyses price moves and follows fixed rules to find and execute trades. In fast moves slippage can occur: the price at which an order is filled differs from the expected price.

Frequently asked questions

Why does gold rise when interest rates fall?

Gold pays no interest. When rates are low you miss out on less by holding gold, which makes it relatively more attractive.

Why is gold priced in dollars?

The global gold trade has historically been organised in dollars. As a result, the dollar exchange rate directly affects the gold price.

Can the gold price be predicted?

Not with certainty. Strategies look for opportunities based on patterns and rules, but no method can guarantee the future.
